The Bulldog basketball team arrived at Bulldog Pit Friday, Jan. 30, determined to make a statement in their first game of the second season. Their fans packed the stands looking for a show against one of Artesia's longtime, on-again/off-again rivals. In the end, everyone wearing orange got exactly what they wanted. In their first game back from a seven-day break filled with snow, ice, and cancelled classes, the Runnin' 'Dogs heated the Pit up past its melting point in their District 4-AAAA opener, delivering an all-around dominant performance in an 80-48 win over the Lovington Wildcats.

Every member of the Bulldogs' varsity roster contributed at least one point to the victory as Artesia put the pedal down and kept it there. Not even a strong second half offensively for the 'Cats could put a dent in the devastating lead the 'Dogs built in the first two quarters, coming just shy of the 30-point mark in the second quarter while holding Lovington to just 13 points through two. The Wildcats wouldn't get on the board until midway through the opening eight minutes, posting just two more field goals from there. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, got a bucket off the tip from Clay Kincaid -- who had two more in the quarter -- and proceeded to build an 18-6 lead on a pair of coast-to-coast layups from Braylon Vega, two running jumpers by Charlie Campbell, and a basket each in the paint by Trent Egeland and Jack Byers.

Artesia's hounding defense continued to stymie the Wildcats in the second, allowing the Bulldogs to keep scoring in virtually unstoppable bursts. Eight points from Campbell and four from Egeland were added in between buckets from Lovington's Danny Criswell, and Egeland and Tootie McNeil each posted a shot in the paint before a Jojo Perez trey at the two-minute mark wrapped up Lovington's first-half scoring. Campbell would answer it in kind, and both Vega and Egeland added a basket and two from the stripe before half's end to send the 'Dogs up the ramp leading 46-13.

The boys in orange spent the second half flirting with the 35-point mercy rule, effectively switching the 'Cats' mission in the final two quarters from staging a comeback to keeping the clock operating normally. En route to the 32-point win, the Runnin' 'Dogs delivered several highlight reel moments, including a two-handed slam by Cael Houghtaling off the alley-oop pass from Campbell early in the third. Campbell added seven points to his total in that period and Corbyn Dominguez scored four to see the Bulldogs into the fourth up by 30, 62-32, despite 19 points by Lovington.

Artesia was able to heavily work its bench into the bout in the fourth, and they kept the party at the Pit rolling. Sawyer Whitehead opened the final eight with a bucket, Jace Deans went 1-2 from the line with 6:10 to go in the game, and Derrick Warren bookended a pair from the line by Perez with a pair of baskets in the paint to keep the 'Dogs' lead over the 30-point threshold. Another bucket from Whitehead and a fast-break layup by Diego Morales took the game into its final seconds, where Vega added the exclamation point with two baskets that set the 80-48 final.

Campbell took top scoring honors on the night with 23, followed by Vega with 13 and Egeland with 12. Perez and Criswell tied for Lovington's high point with 13. With the win, Artesia improved to 16-4 on the season, 1-0 in D4 play, while the 'Cats dropped to 4-17, 0-1.

The Lady Bulldog basketball team knew they needed a consistent effort Jan. 30 against Lovington in their District 4-AAAA opener at Bulldog Pit. Unfortunately, however, the bout turned into more of a roller-coaster ride for both teams, and when the car pulled back into the station, it was the Class 4A eighth-ranked Lady Wildcats who'd done just enough, 41-30.

A little rust was to be expected. The Artesia girls were coming off a week-long break that happened to coincide with the winter storm that cancelled school for four days. But the Lady 'Dogs could never seem to get anything going offensively in the contest, averaging just over seven points per quarter. And while Lovington didn't fare any better from the field, finishing with 10 field goals to Artesia's 11, the Wildcats took nearly three times as many trips to the charity stripe as did the girls in orange, getting 19 of their points there out of 29 attempts while the Lady 'Dogs went 7-11.

After opening with an offensive putback from Avery Frederick -- the game's first basket, coming with 5:47 to go in the first -- it would be three minutes before Artesia scored again on a pair of free throws by Brooklyn Fuentes. In between, the Lady 'Cats were able to piece together 10 points of their own to help send Lovington into the second up 14-4. Essentially taking on Ashelynn Borunda for much of that period, the Lady 'Dogs countered the Lovington senior's seven with a drive to the hoop and an old-fashioned three-point play from Jenna Whitmire and a Gracelyn Kuykendall shot in the paint to stay within 10 as the half fell under two minutes. And although the 'Cats would add five more in the final seconds, a trey from Zaleigh Greer at the 1:05 mark helped keep Artesia's deficit manageable at the break, 26-14.

The Artesia girls were able to gain more ground on Lovington in the third, quickly pulling within eight on a teardrop jumper from Fuentes, a long J from Ashton Craft, and a Kuykendall layup off the fast break. But another long scoring drought prevented further damage, with Peyton Barela scoring an an offensive putback with 1:15 to go. With help from one free throw by Barela and two from Greer, however, the Lady Bulldogs were down by just seven, 32-25, heading into the fourth. Borunda drained a three to kick off that period, but one from the line by Whitmire and back-to-back buckets by Frederick and Fuentes made it a five-point game, 35-30, with 4:30 still to play. Those four-and-a-half minutes, however, would be a war of attrition from the field for Artesia. The Lady 'Dogs were unable to score again in the contest, while Lovington closed out with a 6-8 showing from the stripe to lock down the 41-30 win.

Borunda led all scorers on the evening with 21, while Fuentes and Whitmire both finished with six for Artesia. The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 11-9 on the season, 0-1 in district, while the Lady 'Cats improved to 16-5, 1-0.

The Artesia High School swim teams wait all year for the chance to compete in their home pool with their families and friends looking proudly on. So -- despite the fact the Artesia Aquatic Center got an extra event this season when it hosted the Carlsbad Holiday Invite for the displaced Cavemen -- when the penultimate weekend in January arrived with snow and ice in the forecast, forcing the cancellation of all sporting events, it was unhappy news for the Bulldogs, the Lady Bulldogs, and their coaches and supporters. Fortunately, however, one more weekend remained between Jan. 24 and the District 3/4 Meet -- which, equally fortunately, was also to be hosted in the City of Champions -- in early February. The squads were able to swap out of their intended trip to the Griffin Invite in Santa Fe and take their fellow southern squads, weary from a week of school cancellations and freezing temperatures, with them.

The Artesia Invite was back on. And what a meet it was.

The Bulldog swim team ruled the pool at the meet, coming in first overall by 21 points over runner-up Clovis. The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, came in a strong second out of a field of 10 behind the Lady Wildcats. The teams also combined to turn in eight state qualifying times in their home water, one new and seven improving upon previous state marks.

Topping the podium three times at the Artesia Invite was senior Aidan Ciro, who bettered his previous state qualifications in the boys' 50-yard freestyle (21.49) and 100 butterfly (51.31), and as part of the 200 medley relay team that also included freshman Joziah Murdoch, senior Javier Rodriguez, and senior Alec Ciro. That slightly different event iteration finished with a time of 1:47.41. Also going for the gold was sophomore Morgan Fisher in the girls' 100 breaststroke with an improved time of 1:12.17.

In the runner-up spot as new state qualifiers were the girls' 200 freestyle relay team of Fisher, freshman Carly DeHoyos, junior Johanna Padilla, and senior Sarah Plotner with a time of 1:50.86. Finishing second and re-qualifying for state were Fisher in the girls' 200 individual medley (2:26.66) and the 200 medley relay team of Padilla, Fisher, Plotner and DeHoyos (2:00.51). Also posting runner-up performances were Padilla in the girls' 100 backstroke (1:05.64), Murdoch in the boys' 500 free (5:43.99), and the boys' 400 free relay team of Chaz Rogers, Bryce Walton, Deacon Simon and Kaleb Barquero (4:22.77).

Getting the bronze and re-qualifying with a season best time in the girls' 100 freestyle was Plotner with a 58.73. Murdoch, meanwhile, just missed the qualifying mark in the boys' 100 butterfly with a 59.10 -- 11-hundredths of a second away. Also coming in third were Padilla in the girls' 100 butterfly (1:10.37), Rogers in the boys' 200 freestyle (2;18.61), and the girls' 400 free relay team of Anikah Wisen, London Acosta, Ella Thomas and Zoe Gomez (4:56.05).

The AHS swim program also honored its Class of 2026 seniors at the meet: Aidan Ciro, Alec Ciro, Rodriguez, Plotner and Aylin Yescas.

Socorro/Cobre District Tri-Dual

After seeing their final event of the regular season -- a tri-dual with Alamogordo and Clovis scheduled for Jan. 29 in Artesia -- called off due to school cancellations, the Bulldog wrestlers were raring to go Jan. 30 for their second of two District 4/A-AAAA tri-duals of the season. The squad headed to Socorro to take on the host Warriors and the Cobre Indians, coming up short of Socorro, 51-30, and defeating Cobre 54-30. The Bulldogs took seven matches by forfeit versus the Indians, with freshman Jayce Herron defeating Luis Molina in the 113-pound weight class and classmate Jonathan Corza topping Angel Gaxiola in the 126-pound match. The 'Dogs won the 138-pound class against the Warriors, with freshman Atley Starnes besting Micah Burleson.

AHS BOWLING

PICTURED: The Bulldog bowling teams roll out for their final regular-season tournament of the 2025-26 season at Starlight Lanes in Bernalillo.

With the state tournament on the horizon, New Mexico's high school bowlers arrived at Starlight Lanes in Bernalillo Jan. 31 with one real goal in mind: fine tune for the main event. The Week 10 tournament of the New Mexico High School Bowling Association's 2025-26 season gave teams a chance to put their squads and their strategies through one final test drive and celebrate a farewell of sorts to another season. That didn't mean, however, that everyone wasn't trying to win. But only one team could -- or in Artesia's case, two.

With the sort of dominance they'd displayed throughout this year's campaign, Artesia 1 and Artesia 2 swept the Advanced division, making it a clean sweep for the season of going gold and silver at every event they attended. It was a colossal feat and a testament to the dynasty that Bulldog bowling has become in the state. Also topping the podium at the tournament was Artesia 6 in the Novice division, while Artesia 4 came in second in the Intermediate division. Placing third were Artesia 5 (Novice) and Artesia 7 (Rookie), and Artesia 3 was sixth in Intermediate.

Four members of Artesia 1 averaged in the 200s in their tournament-winning performance. Ayden Gomez once again led the way with games of 222 and 247 (469). Jace Miles was next with a 232 and 223 (455), followed by Payton DeMerritt (220-225=445), Brenden Depew (181-223=404) and Ayden Dean (173-189=362). In the runner-up spot, Artesia 2 had a pair of bowlers score in the 400s: Chase Collins (231-212=443) and Brent McIntire (190-211=401). Rounding out the squad's efforts were Damian Lopez (178-213=391), Jurijah Gonzales (179-189=368) and Talyn Pacheco (168-158=326).

In the loaded 12-team Intermediate division, Artesia 4 turned in an excellent season finale, bowling a team 3,541 with four combined totals over 345 in their runner-up showing. The team placed second by 87 pins to Volcano Vista. Bowling a 362 for the group was Alejandro Bahena, followed closely by Edwin Villarreal (361), Ezekiel Sanchez (360), Justin Rodriguez (346) and Peyton Troost (267). Artesia 3 finished sixth in the division with three bowlers scoring in the 300s: Jack Erbacher (322), Drake Thurman (311) and Ashlyn McIntire (301).

Out of a dozen squads in the Novice division, Artesia 6 came away with the Week 10 title, bowling a team 2,674, ahead of second-place Pojoaque Valley's 2,525. Coming in third was Artesia 5 with a 2,398. Leading the way for Artesia 6 was Adam Longoria with a stellar season-ending 435, followed by Colton Sandmann (327), Phoebe Green (295), Kathrine Lewis (289) and JC Apodaca (249). Destiny Powell led Artesia 5's bronze-medal tourney with a 342, followed by Garyn Usherwood (286), Daniel Alcocer (262), Exaviar Corza (261) and Ethan Longoria (246).

Finally, in the Rookie division, Artesia 7 closed out 2025-26 with a third-place 1,820, behind La Cueva (2,055) and Del Norte (1,905). The team had three bowlers with combined scores in the 200s: Sophie Kitchen (260), Kylie Mendoza (254) and Jade Marquez (227).

AHS CHEER

A graphic features a photo of a large group of teen girls in orange, black and white cheerleading uniforms with large white bows in their hair. The front row holds two trophies and two banners.

The Bulldog varsity cheerleaders headed to Las Cruces Jan. 31 for the competitive New Mexico State University Spirit Championship and picked up a hardware haul to bring back to the City of Champions. Artesia placed first overall in All-Girl Cheer with Music and came in third in All-Girl Game Day Cheer, also adding Judges' Choice and Best Pyramid to their list of honors on the day.
